New York: become an apprentice (NYS Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship)

New York State Department of Labor

NYS DOL says apprentices earn a paycheck while learning through on-the-job training and related classroom training. You must be 18, or 16-17 with parental approval. Training lasts one to six years depending on the trade. Two pathways: recruitment into a NYS Registered Apprenticeship (if you meet the program's requirements) or a 'Direct Entry' program that builds the skills needed to qualify. Training is usually offered by the sponsor at no cost to the apprentice, with rare exceptions the page describes. Most programs require a high school diploma or equivalent; some require specific courses, experience or physical ability. Search openings in the NYS Job Bank or contact your local apprenticeship office; contact email published on the page.

Who it is for (as stated)
18+ (or 16-17 with parental approval); each sponsor sets its minimum qualifications.
Cost or award (as stated)
Usually no cost to the apprentice; apprentices are paid (as stated)
Deadline or timing
Each sponsor sets its own dates; see Apprenticeship Announcements on the state site.
