L&I says anyone can pursue an apprenticeship and that starting is similar to applying for a job: choose a program, apply, interview and possibly take an aptitude test, then get selected. Generally you must be able to do the work (with or without reasonable accommodation) and provide proof of age, a high school diploma or equivalent and other documents. Its Apprenticeship Registration & Tracking System (ARTS) lists all registered programs, searchable by county and occupation, with links to program standards and websites. L&I states it is neither a staffing agency nor a career counseling business. Union and non-union programs both exist, and cost depends on the program. Apprenticeship preparation programs can help you get ready.
